Welcome to my new weblog, Alpha Gecko. This blog combines a number of old blogs into one (thus all of the content before the welcome entry). Why combine?

  • Many (most...maybe all) of my narrowly focused blogs were not updated often enough to live very well on their own.
  • I can easily create a place for entries that wouldn't have fit the themes of any of my old blogs.
  • Cross posting entries that fit into multiple blogs was a bit sloppy--here I can select however many categories I want for a single entry.
  • Subscribers to one narrowly focused blog are less likely to be aware of my other writings than subscribers to a combined blog (note: you can subscribe to category feeds if your feed reader supports Atom 1.0--I wouldn't have made the move without that capability!)
  • Moving from Blogger to WordPress gives me more control since I can alter the engine itself. The Atom feeds are one example of a place where I've made a change. Atom "1.0" has been out long enough that I think the world is (or should be) ready to ditch Atom 0.3. So I altered the Atom generating script to make it output 1.0 instead of 0.3. Also, I wanted the category feeds to have their titles and descriptions come from the category instead of main blog.

I don't know whether I can claim to be an alpha geek, but as the owner of Gecko Tribe, LLC, surely I am the Alpha Gecko.
